Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
