European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
